Mary Thompson, Director East (2010)
I innocently stumbled into sheepdog herding 13 yrs ago. For many years I had been heavily involved in the world of competitive show jumping, eventing, and hunting with hounds. Seven days a week of breaking and training young horses had left me with bad knees and an equally painful lower back. The doc said “do something else for a while”, so I sold my show hunter and decided to take a 2 yr break from the horse industry, fully expecting to return to it once my aches and pains subsided. I’d always loved dogs and when my collie x heeler passed away I decided to purchase a lovely Scotch collie and a Border collie to keep her company. That’s when the first border entered my life,….and oh what challenge she was! Coca is gone now, but the trials and tribulations that we had, provided me with many of the skills I use today to solve the varied problems associated with competitive herding.
I’ve been an Open Handler now for 10 yrs with many successes on both sides of the border. I currently have 6 border collies of which 5 are trialing competitively in USBCHA sanctioned trials. The 6th, one only being 17 months, is training up well. There have been many memorable moments; National Finals Oklahoma with a 14th place finish in a field of 114 Nursery Dogs, the Overall Championship at Grass Creek Park Kingston, the Double Lift Final at the Kentucky Bluegrass, the National Finals in Gettysburg 2007, an completing an international shed in 2008 and placing 7th. I expect there to be many more as I’m truly hooked on the sport. As you may have guessed, there was no permanent return to the horse industry, although I do still ride and train for friends occasionally. I breed my own line of trial dogs under the kennel name of Hawk’s Landing Border Collies, and own a small flock of Scottish black face in southern Ontario, just 20 minutes west of London
